FAQ's
Why does the course only offer 1.5 credits? Why are there only 6 lectures?
The MSc graduate programme of the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine has been exploring for methods to increase the degree of student choice in our graduate programme. In reviewing our course offerings, it became clear that not all students needed to study all of the material included in EPI 6276 (Quantitative Methods in Epidemiology). Instead, they would benefit from being able to study one or two analytical methods in more detail. Therefore, this year, the department decided to split EPI6276 (and EPI 5241) into 1.5 credit courses, each with more focused topics. In order to comply with university regulations, the 1.5 credit courses only offer 20 hours of lectures. This year (2012), in order to avoid teaching classes after Easter, the lectures will be covered in 6 classes.
What is the registration deadline?
Students are encourage to registration in December. However, because this course is offered in the second half of the semester, the officlal deadline for registration without paying late fees is March 1, 2010. Normally, all students are expected to have completed enrolment before the first class. The class will have enrolment capped at about 20 students. Hence, early enrolment may be a good idea. First priority is given to students enrolled in the MSc in epidemiology, in the PhD in Population Health and in the Certificate in Population Health Risk Assessment. Students enrolled in other programmes of formal study will have second priority with 'special students' having the lowest priority. Despite the precautions listed here, no student who was qualified for this course has been denied entry
Can I audit the course?
No. The university officially allows students to formally register as auditors, meaning that they pay a reduced fee, do not complete assignments and do not get full academic credit. However, this option is at the discretion of the course professor. For EPI 5344, auditing is not a productive approach since much of the learning occurs through completion of the assignments. Hence, students are not permitted to audit EPI 5344
Under special circumstances (e.g. visiting faculty or students needing a refresher for thesis work), students will be permitted to attend the lecture without formally registering for the course. Permission of the instructor is required for this.
Will there be an examination?
No. The course is currently evaluated through two essay-style assignments requiring the analysis of real data.
