FAQ's
What is the registration deadline?
Normally, all students are expected to have completed enrolment before the first class. The class will have enrolment capped at about 60 students. Early enrolment is a good idea. First priority is given to students enrolled in the MSc in epidemiology, in the PhD in Population Health and in the Certificate in Population Health Risk Assessment. Students enrolled in other programmes of formal study at the University of Ottawa will have second priority with 'special students' having the lowest priority. Students should obtain permission to register as early as possible. They will be placed on a waiting list until enrolment numbers clarify. By late-August, they will be allowed to formally register.
Can I audit the course?
No. The university officially allows students to formally register as auditors, meaning that they pay a reduced fee, do not complete assignments and do not get full academic credit. However, this option is at the discretion of the course professor. For EPI 5420, auditing is not a productive approach since much of the learning occurs through completion of the assignments. There are also potential issues with lack of seating in the classroom. Hence, students are not permitted to audit EPI 5420
Under special circumstances (e.g. visiting faculty or students needing a refresher for thesis work), students will be permitted to attend the lecture without formally registering for the course. Permission of the instructor is required for this.
Will there be an examination?
Yes. The course is evaluated through a combination of assignments, participation in the discussion forum and a final examination. The examination will be 3 hours in length, will take place three days after the last class and will largely link to the topics covered in the final assignment. More details can be found on the page detailing evaluation methods.
Why do the lectures go so late in the term (December 14)?
Labor Day is very late this year (September 7). The first day of unviersity classes is Wednesday, September 9. Since the EPI 5240 lectures are given on Monday afternoons, the first lecture is not until September 14. On top of the late start, October 12 is an officla holidahy (Thanksgiving) and no classes are offered. In order to complete the required lecture time (39 hours), the last class has to be on December 14
